thank you for replying. yes i do open it in oo answer # 2 yes same thing happens Anser # 3 yes they are. every ting else works fine and is readable. i was working in oo when it went into a loop. the recovery failed after i restarted my computer. everytine i try to open the file i have to go through a dialog bx. some sort of ascII filter asking me what language and so forth. thank you so much for replying to me. would you like me to send the file? i use window xp home version. i will send the file anyway just in case ----- Original Message ----- From: "James Knott" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

When you open a file, is it actually OpenOffice that's opening?  What
happens if you start OpenOffice first and then open the file, using File

Open?  Do the files have a valid .ODT or other recognized extension?

Were these files previously readable in OpenOffice?  What version of
OpenOffice?  What operating system?

Without a little more information, we can't do much to help.
