Hi
I have recently bought a new computer with windows vista home basic 32bit and have found I am unable to read word documents that have been sent to me by e-mail to be downloaded. I can read the e-mails ok and down load the attached documents but cannot read them as it just shows encrypted information. Can open office help with this problem? A friend of mine who works in IT recommended your site as possibly being able to help suggesting I download any of your software that says Bit 32. Can you please help even if it is to advise me as to which software I need to buy.
Many thanks

Were those files created with Microsoft Office 2007 and saved in the new .DOCX format? If so, you'll have to arrange to have those files saved in an older format. Another option is to download the free Microsoft Word Viewer and Compatibility Pack from http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/CD102258581033.aspx. This will enable you to open those files and copy & paste the contents into OpenOffice. Installing the Word viewer will change the default application for .DOC files, so you will have to change that back so that OpenOffice remains the default, as described below.

Changing file associations

Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and choose the desired application.
If that method is not available, follow the directions listed here:
