Since then I have bought two different new computers, and each time I

But then I tried to install packages and discovered that Fedora's RPM

That it itself should be good enough reason to choose Ubuntu :)
I first started to use Red Hat 8. When they came out with Fedora, I
tried Debian. Never went back to RPM based distro. Debian uses apt, I
have not seen any other package management system which is as solid and
dependable! Then came along Ubuntu (it is based on Debain) -- and it was
great!

Now if Fedora, YUM is the way to install and update packages. I use
Fedora at work and home with no issues. RH 8 was a real pig and I have
been using RedHat since 4.2. :)
But for a new user, I also recommend Ubuntu as well.
