I was formatting a wedding ceremony for my wife and decided to copy the title page from a previous wedding, editing the names, date, and venue.

So, I had my OOo Writer 2.3.1 new document, as well as the old one, tiled on my Windows XP screen so that I could "Select all" (Ctrl+A) on the title page of the old document and then Paste into the blank title page of the new one.

However, I found I could not "Select all". The most I could select on the old document title page was a single text box. I did manage to complete the job by Selecting, Copying, and Pasting, each text box, one at a time, which was a bit tedious.

I noticed that the file extension on the old document was .odm, and that its file type was "Master Document". I think I actually prepared it in OOo-Draw, but now it is coming up as a Writer Master Document. I have heard the term: "Master Document", or read it somewhere in the OOo documentation, but I have no idea what a Master Document is or how to use one, so you can imagine how baffled I was to find that I have actually created one, sometime in the past.

I checked other wedding ceremonies on file and all of the ones that have the Title Page as a separate document, have it saved as an Open Document Master Document - so saving the title page as a Master Document was not just a one-of typo, or mistake.

The reason I make the title page a separate document is so I can use OOo-Draw + some graphics + colour. The bulk of the ceremony is in another file and consists of several pages of text in black on white. I print the Ceremony on a monochrome laser, and the Title Page on a colour laser

My QUESTIONS are:

1. What is a Master Document, and when would one use one?
2. I use Templates a lot - is a Master Document similar to a Template?
3. How could I have made a Master document without knowing it?
4. Why can I select a single field in the Master Document, but not Select All? 5. Is this a bug worth reporting, or just my own ineptitude shining through?

Many thanks, James
