Hi! I recently got a new computor and it was recommended that I begin using OpenOffice on it. I went to Open Office.org Office Suite and downloaded the program but was charged $29.95. The person who recommended you to me then told me it should have been free, and then I would have the opportunity to contribute to the project. Why was I charged this amount to download your program? Thanks Bill Stevenson
If you were charged, you downloaded from somewhere other than www.openoffice.org, where OpenOffice is indeed free, though there are instructions for making a donation, should you desire. There are many sites that charge for OpenOffice. Some provide a CD, which may be useful for someone without broadband internet access, but others charge for nothing more than a download link, as you have discovered. When you recommend OpenOffice to others, please always refer them to www.openoffice.org. You might also want to mention this to the person who recommended OpenOffice to you.
