I don't think your message subject is correct. Are you saying you can't open Excel spreadsheets in OpenOffice or OpenOffice in Excel? If you really meant Excel spreadsheets in Excel, then you've come to the wrong place.

OpenOffice can read & write Excel spreadsheets, except those in the new .XLSX format. If you have one of those, arrange to have it saved in the older .XLS format. If you're creating a spreadsheet in OpenOffice, for use in Excel, you'll have to select the appropriate format, from the drop down list, when you use Save as. Also, ensure automatic file name extension is selected.

By default, OpenOffice saves files in the ISO standard ODF formats, which Microsoft refuses to support.
