Unfortunately the rtf filters between OpenOffice.org and MS Word are
highly incompatible. Some will blame MS, some OpenOffice.org (OOo), but
the end result is that rtf between the two simply do not work well.

Let you teacher know that you are using OOo and ask the reason why the
teacher is requesting in rft. Let the teacher know that you are using
OOo and that you have problems with rtf, then ask the reason for
requesting rtf. If the teacher is using MS Word, ask if he/she would
mind if you sent in .doc format instead. You can then save your work as
.doc and send in that format. It could very well be that the teacher is
tired of trying to open .docx files from all the students with their new
Word 2007 trial versions and as a result has requested the work be
submitted in rtf.

Your best option is to talk to the teacher & find out the reason. Then
post back and I'm pretty sure that the folks on this OOo user's list
will try to help you find a reasonable solution.
