Dear Sir,
I wrote you regarding file formats doc, xls, ppt.
I would be obliged if you can tell me if you intend to use Microsoft file
format specifications (which were released on February 15, 2008) for a future
version of OpenOffice?

Thank you,

The version of OpenOffice we expect in about September is supposed to be
able to handle the new Microsoft "2007" formats, with extensions like
.docx, .pptx and so on.
Please note that last year the International Standards Organisation
(ISO) rejected these formats as standards. On the other hand, ODF (Open
Document Format, as used by OpenOffice) is an ISO standard.
However, it seems unlikely that OpenOffice will use the Microsoft
formats natively as there are many issues with them, not the least of
which is that the formats are not, and almost certainly never will be
fully documented. Interoperability is and will remain a major problem
with the MS formats. If you are interested in these things, by all means
read http://holloway.co.nz/can-other-vendors-implement-ooxml.html
There is a free plugin for MS office that allows it to read and write
OpenOffice's ODF documents. You can get it at
