I've been away over the weekend, but did you get this sorted out Klaus?
If you are still having problems, I would be happy to have a look at
the original or the pdf or both. I doubt that my knowledge of German is
likely to be too much threat to confidentiality, it is over 50 years
since my 2 years of study at school!

Klaus has sent me the offending .pdf off list, and it appears that the
problem was the version of Acrobat Reader he was using. No problem with
various linux .pdf readers and when he updated Acrobat.
