That actually simplify matter. AFAIK Leopard installation normally came with X11. Unless you reinstalled the whole OS X and deliberately chose not to install X11, you should already have it.

Even if you have to install X11, the OS X DVD should have it, you don't need to download anything. Below is one instruction to install it:

So I downloaded the aqua version of OO (I understand that's a "pre-release" version and will have some issues).

Even if you have to install X11, it will be much easier than dealing with issues in aqua version of OOo. I recommend you download the X11 version of OOo (as you most likely already have X11), or download NeoOffice <http://www.neooffice.org/>.
