It literally means a paperback that is intended to be sold by bookstores
("the trade"), rather than newsstands, drugstores, etc. (the "mass
market"). In practice, it means a paperback that is not the size and
shape of a mass-market paperback. In terms of page layout, except for
page size, it doesn't strictly mean anything. However, as far as current
fashions go, trade-paperback page layout is more likely than either
hardback or mass-market page layout to be complex, with sidebars,
wordwrapped figures, bled index tabs, and similar gaudy devices.
