Sorry, Brian, but in terms of layout, what is a trade paperback???

It literally means a paperback that is intended to be sold by bookstores ("the trade"), rather than newsstands, drugstores, etc. (the "mass market"). In practice, it means a paperback that is not the size and shape of a mass-market paperback. In terms of page layout, except for page size, it doesn't strictly mean anything. However, as far as current fashions go, trade-paperback page layout is more likely than either hardback or mass-market page layout to be complex, with sidebars, wordwrapped figures, bled index tabs, and similar gaudy devices.
