laptop windows 98, pc XP.

You must download everything before you install. An uncompressed version of the program on a disc counts as a download. Click on it to install. You can choose to *install* Writer only during the installation process, but OpenOffice is a single program with shared libraries so there will be very little saving in space. Also occasionally features will not work properly when a single module is installed. In short, installing individual modules is possible but not advised. If you are worried about disk space, you might try downloading OpenOffice Portable from http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable and install it on a flash drive, if your laptop takes USB flash drives.
