You don't say what operating system you use, but I'll assume it's Windows. What you can do to get icons on your desktop is to go to the Start menu, select Programs, point to OpenOffice, then on the sub-menu that appears, right click on Writer and select Create Shortcut. Then do the same for Calc and for Impress.
