Good news and bad news. The good news is that, Yes it is similar to MS Excel. Many of the functions and operations work in almost the exact same manner. Under the hood (things that are not obvious to the casual observer) the software operates in a decidedly different fashion. Calc was designed to work with spreadsheets in a very efficient manner but it can in no way be considered a clone of Excel.

The bad news is that I would not recommend using the OpenOffice Suite for someone trying to earn a specialist degree in Microsoft. Excel and Calc have too many things different in their methods and operation. You didn't mention what school you are attending but many of them offer Microsoft products at a student discount.
