The "type" shown by Windows does *not* depend on the file itself but on the "association" between the extension (.png, .doc, ...) and the program that is registered as the default for opening files with that extension. The "default program" is the one that runs when you double click on the name of the file. If you were to "associate" .png files with Microsoft Excel then the type would be displayed as "spreadsheet" or whatever is the appropriate name. You had The Gimp as the default program for opening .jpg files.
