I thought Works had the option of saving in .DOC format. If so, you save in that format and then open with OpenOffice. While some specific versions of OpenOffice can open Works files, generally it can't. Another method is to download the free Microsoft viewers for the document type, along with the Compatibility Pack and then copy & paste from the viewer into OpenOffice. Installing the viewers will make them the default application for opening Microsoft Office files, so you'll have to reset the file associations back to OpenOffice.

Changing file associations

Right click on file icon
Select Open With > Choose Program...
Check "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and choose the desired application.
