Could you please explain the legal difference between a single
vertical line and a double? I cannot find any mention of a legal
requirement to use one of the other. I do see that some jurisdictions
require specific typesets, but nothing pertaining to the dollar sign
itself.

While googling the subject, I found on the unicode mailing list
mention that the American currency does not have the dollar sign on it
at all. A picture seems to confirm this:

Lastly, when you create a document in MS Office on the same computer,
do you see a double-barred dollar sign? If so, check what font you are
using. Set the same font in OOo. Post back here so that we will know,
too. Thanks.
