ISO standard ODF file formats are the default for OpenOffice. Since Microsoft refuses to support ODF, you'll have to save in Word format. Also ensure automatic file name extension is selected. You can also send in Word format directly from OpenOffice, by clicking on File > Send > E-mail as Microsoft Word.
