I'm having terrible trouble with frame placement in Writer. I have a document
of about 20 pages with 6 frames in it: 2 diagrams (created in Draw) and 4 text
listings. My preference is to anchor them to characters, so I can say things
like "as you can see in Figure 2 [anchor], ..." and have the corresponding frame
move as the text does. But Writer does very strange things when I insert
frames. Sometimes things work fine, but other times I get completely blank
pages before or after a frame, pages with only 1 or 2 lines of text on a page
before or after a frame, and sometimes two frames are placed directly on top of
one another. In each case, I'm using no wrap.
My real goal is to have these frames float so that they appear either on the
page where their anchor is located or on the soonest page after that where there
is room for them. (There may not be room on the next page, because other frames
may be waiting in line for placement in front of them.) My sense is that Writer
doesn't offer this option, because it seems to break pages before laying down a
frame, so a page that's only partially full will be left with a lot of empty
space if the next page begins with a frame. I can live with that for now, but
the empty pages, two-line pages, and frames on top of one another are really
unacceptable.
Can people offer suggestions on what I can do to get more well-behaved frame
placement? I'm using OO 2.3 under WinXP.
Thanks,
Scott
