No. 2.4 will overwrite 2.3, on Windows at least. You will (I think) be
left with a folder named something like "OpenOffice.org2.3" which you can
safely delete. Your dictionaries, templates etc will be kept intact. Just be
sure, *before* you start the installation, that the Quickstarter is *not*
running and, obviously, that you have no OOo documents open. If you need
Java you'll have to configure 2.4 to use whichever version you want/have.

TOOLS -> OPTIONS -> under OpenOffice.org click on JAVA then select the
flavor of JAVA you want openoffice to use.
