OpenOffice runs happily on Vista. Ther's just been a new release (2.4) of OpenOffice so the download pages might be a bit busy. Where exactly did you try to download from? The correct place is www.openoffice.org . What sort of connection do you have to the internet? If it's broadband you should be in good shape. If it's dialup you might want to consider spending a few <insert currency name here>s to buy a CD from one of the vendors in the list linked to from the download page.
