By default, OpenOffice saves files in the ISO standard ODF formats. You can select another format, by choosing it from the drop down list, in Save as. If you want to always work in Word format, you can make it the default. To do that, click on Tools > Options > Load/Save. At the bottom of the panel, will be a pair of drop down lists, where you can select the default format for the various document types. While you can make Word the default, the recommended procedure is to work in ODF and then save the finished work in other formats, when required. If you want to email a Word document, you can click on File > Send > E-mail as Microsoft Word, so you don't even have to save in Word format first.
