Will Open Office work with the current Apple operating system?

The short answer is yes. The long answer includes two caveats:

1) current production versions of OpenOffice require the use of the X11 windowing utility. Unfortunately, the version of X11 included with Leopard has 'issues'. Make sure you have the latest updates for OS X, then install an updated X11 from here [top package, currently 2.1.4]: http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz/wiki/Releases . Note that if you're not used to using X11 programs it is significantly different from Aqua [hotkeys, etc.] An Aqua native version of OpenOffice is in work, but will take some time to achieve.

2) The 'wizards' functionality of OpenOffice is being updated to use the new java in Leopard. For now, wizards in the currently available OO for Mac [version 2.3.1] don't work. The new version 2.4.0 should come out for Mac any day now, this will fix the wizards.
