I mostly write in English, but occasionally in French (I'm trying to
improve my french). I have the French localisation files installed
as well as the French myspell dictionary.
When I click ABC (spellcheck) I have to select the french dictionary
in the drop-down menu for each and every word in the document, which
is tedious.
Is there a way of telling OOo that I always want to use the french
dictionary for certain documents?
Yes: there are many ways.
o To set a different language for an entire document, go to Tools |
Options... | Language Settings | Languages and change the default
language there. You can tick the "For the current document only" box
if you do not want this change to stick for later new documents.
o An alternative is to change the language of the paragraph style
you are using in your document. If, perhaps, you are using only the
Default paragraph style, this would similarly affect the entire
document. Right-click and choose Edit Paragraph Style... | Font and
change the language there.
o To set a different language for a small part of a document, e.g. a
word or sentence, select it and then go to Format | Character... |
Font (or right-click | Character... | Font) and change the language there.
o A better way still is to use styles. Language is a property of
both character and paragraph styles. Create separate styles of
either or both sorts with different languages set, and apply these
styles to appropriate parts of your document. (You can use the "New
Style from Selection" facility to create a copy of a style - in which
you can then modify the language setting.)
If you set different parts of your document to different languages,
you will find that both Spellcheck and AutoSpellcheck will work
seamlessly in multiple languages. This assumes that you have
installed the appropriate dictionaries, of course - but you say that
you have done that already.
I trust this helps.
