Meanwhile, the installation windows is shown, with the
Back and Next buttons grayed out, and with Cancel and
Help available (which makes sense, I would say).
What can I do to fix it?

Hi Sorin
Are you doing this by emerging app-office/openoffice-bin or installing
the binaries from OOo? Looks like the latter, I think. I haven't done
that yet with 2.4, but have it all ready to go.
Do you have java installed already - OOo can use a pre-installed java,
so you could try the non-java package, or try "emerge
app-office/openoffice-bin" which should give you 2.3.1 if you don't want
the latest and greatest.
Looking at your errors it seems java is having trouble trying to install
itself on a non-rpm distro.
