[users] "Command Timed Out" message

I am using Mac OS X 10.5.2 (Leopard).  Whenever I start OpenOffice 2.3 
or 2.4 I get a long delay and the message "Command Timed Out" (or 
something very similar) and a choice of Cancel or OK.  If I choose OK, 
Open Office starts up.  (Normally?)  How do I avoid the lengthy time out?
