The next version is expected to have a stable converter for these files.

But why would you or anyone want to use these orphan formats. Be aware
that Office 2007 .docx and other formats will be updated soon and the
existing format will be orphaned. It is recommended that all Office 2007
users save in the older .doc formats for the moment.

Note that while some Microsoft employees actually dispute some points
raised here in the comments nobody disputes his main claim. In fact
Jason Matusow of Microsoft backs it up.
