Yesterday I downloaded the 2.4 update version of open office. Unlike before - when I used a less advanced version - I cannot open any of my .doc files (winword) any more. When I open such a file I get the reaction of my computer that I have to store something. But I want to work with it.

I'm desperate and sure that you can help.

When you install OpenOffice, you are given the option for it to take over the associations that your operating system keeps for Microsoft Office document file types, including .doc. My guess is that you accepted this option for the previous version of OpenOffice but did not do so for version 2.4. Consequently, these file types are still associated with your previous version of OpenOffice, which is no longer present - having been removed by the installation of version 2.4.

You can reset these associations manually quite easily. But it is probably easier simply to run the installation of version 2.4 again. (There is no need to download it again, of course: just run the previous downloaded file again.) Don't accept the "repair" option, as this will copy your option choice from last time, which is of no use. Instead, take the "reinstall" option (or whatever it is called), and this time accept the offer to transfer the association(s).

I trust this helps.
