When you install OpenOffice, you are given the
option for it to take over the associations that
your operating system keeps for Microsoft Office
document file types, including .doc. My guess is
that you accepted this option for the previous
version of OpenOffice but did not do so for
version 2.4. Consequently, these file types are
still associated with your previous version of
OpenOffice, which is no longer present - having
been removed by the installation of version 2.4.
You can reset these associations manually quite
easily. But it is probably easier simply to run
the installation of version 2.4 again. (There is
no need to download it again, of course: just run
the previous downloaded file again.) Don't
accept the "repair" option, as this will copy
your option choice from last time, which is of no
use. Instead, take the "reinstall" option (or
whatever it is called), and this time accept the
offer to transfer the association(s).
