Did you install from the .rpm download from www.openoffice.org or from a
Redhat repository?
What error message do you get if you run "soffice" or "swriter" from a
shell, or run /opt/openoffice_version/program/soffice (presuming your
openoffice.org is installed in the usual location?
This should give an idea of what is happening.
