I have a text file that is columnized (is that a word!) by spaces not commas or tabs. The first row has the column headings. How do I import this file into calc (or base).

This may vary with operating system (which you have kept a secret). In my version 2.4.0 for Windows XP, there are two techniques which work. Either: o Right-click the file and select Open With > | scalc (but not OpenOffice.org 2.4, which will open the file in Writer). This appears to work whether the file's extension is .txt or .csv. o Open the file in a plain text editor and copy and paste the material into a Calc spreadsheet.

In either case, this brings up the Text Import dialogue. Under Separator options | Separated by, tick at least "space" and possibly "Merge delimiters".

I think the simplest way to get the data into Base is first to put it into Calc, as above. Then:
o Copy the region of the spreadsheet containing the data.
o In Base, select Tables in the left panel.
o Use Edit | Paste (or right-click | Paste in the Tables panel) and follow the "Copy table" dialogue to create a new table with your imported data or to append the data to an existing table.

I trust this helps.
