In addition to the suggestions from Harold Fuchs, there are instructions for lots of different ways to insert special characters with OpenOffice.org on: http://ipa4linguists.pbwiki.com The site is oriented toward using the International Phonetic Alphabet, but the same tricks and techniques work with characters for specific languages. In your case I would use Autocorrect.
