Hi,
I recently downloaded OpenOffice and would like to make one
recommendation. It would be a fantastic option to allow users to
customise their download by preselecting the applications they want
rather than downloading the whole package. Naturally each application
would need its own installer, but this would benefit people who have
slow Internet connections and/or bandwidth restrictions.

Hi Robert
The problem is that OOo is a complete suite, not a package of
independent programs. Thus it is necessary to d/l all, even though it is
possible to do a custom installation and leave some components out. This
is not recommended as functions are shared between components. I
understand that the spreadsheet module is needed if you want to do
tables in Writer, and Writer is needed to display the Help files in
Draw, etc. The savings from a custom install are fairly minor - I have
seen 15-20 MB mentioned. For most people these days it is not worth
risking loss of functionality.
There was a project several years ago to break the d/l up for people on
dial-up, but I think it withered on the vine as faster internet
connections became more widely available.
Regards
Russell
