But it is free, all you have to do is download it from 
<http://openoffice.org>!  Your ONLY cost is the download time if your access

You have a problem IF the M$ stuff saved them in yyyx, where the x is their 
newest incarnation of vendor lock-in.  I believe that OOo-2.4 was supposed to 
work with these, such as .docx, but as I've never allowed any M$ stuff on the 
premises, I am not the one to tell you how to do it.  Perhaps someone more 
familiar with how its done can assist you.
