Please explain. What happens when you try? What are you trying to open?
Which flavour of which Operating System are you using?
Have you actually installed the program or only downloaded it? Please
see the installation instructions linked to on the right hand side of
the page at <http://download.openoffice.org/index.html>.
Once you have installed the program you will be able to open Microsoft
Office documents except those created with MS Office 2007. Please also
see the Getting Started Guide and other documentation at
http://documentation.openoffice.org/
