Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

OpenOffice, by default, saves in the ISO standard ODF formats, which Microsoft refuses to support. There are a few ways around this. One is to save your file in Word format. You can do this in Save as, by selecting the appropriate format from the drop down list. Also, ensure automatic file name extension is selected. You can also send directly from OpenOffice, by clicking on File > Send > E-mail as Microsoft Word. Of course, the best method would be to have them install OpenOffice or, failing that, the Sun ODF plugin, which adds ODF support to Microsoft Office.
