You can have both Microsoft Office and OpenOffice installed on the same computer, without issue. The only thing you watch is during the install, you'll be asked if you want to make OpenOffice the default application for Microsoft Office files. This is entirely your choice and can be easily changed later. You might also want to add ODF support to Microsoft Office, by installing the Sun ODF plugin. This will enable you to open the default OpenOffice ODF files in Microsoft Office.
