I have a document which I am editing in Writer, each time I press

Original document edited in MS Word.
One possibility is that the paragraph style that you are using
(probably created by the conversion process from Microsoft Word
format) has the "page break before" property associated with it. If
so, when you press Enter, a new paragraph is created in the same
style, which demands a preceding manual page break.
o Right-click in a relevant paragraph and go to Edit Paragraph
Style... | Text Flow | Breaks.
o Is there a tick by Insert? And does it say "Page" for Type and
"Before" for Position?
o Remove the tick by Insert.
Note that this will affect all paragraphs that have this style. You
may have to reinsert any page breaks that you do want. Another
possibility is to change the paragraph style for the paragraphs you
are working on to one which does not have the "page break before" property.
I trust this helps.
