I haven't run Panther in some time, but have you tried the following?:
1. Open an X11 terminal
2. Type in the following command (including the quotes):
"/Applications/Openoffice.org 2.4.app/Contents/MacOS/swriter &"
3 Get back to us if it doesn't work. Perhaps someone who runs both Panther
and Ooo 2.4 can help.
