You can - with the correct options chosen.
o Go to Tools | Options... | OpenOffice.org Writer | Table | Input in tables.
o Tick "Number recognition".
o Ensure that Alignment is not ticked.
Your choice for "Number format recognition" doesn't matter if what
you enter into the cell is a real date. But if this option is not
ticked and you enter something in error that is not a true date, the
number format is reset to Text. Even if you then correct your
mistake, the date formatting has been lost. So it is probably useful
to tick this option too.
