FWIW:  I experienced the same thing in 2.4 a few months ago; no one ever 
figured it out then either.  I had a couple of "can't duplicate" 
responses and then no more posts.  Unfortunately I've forgotten which 
file it was, but if I can dig it up I'll pass along some details.  Also 
XP SP2+.  Only thing I thought of was file assocations but no one 
thought that would be it.  I had not changed any of them; all were/are 
at defaults for MS Office yet.
