You don't say which part of OOo you're doing this in, so as examples;
In the word processor;
Put your cursor over the date you wish to modify, then select Fields...
from the Format menu, and you'll be presented with a list of possible
date formats you can use.
In the spreadsheet;
Enter your date, right click on the cell and choose Format Cells...
click on the Numbers tab, and the date formatting should be available
to you.
