Chris Caposella, a senior vice president in Microsoft's business
division in Redmond, Washington, said the decision to weave ODF into
Office 2007 resulted from Microsoft's new commitment to make its
software easier to work with rivals, part of a general move away from
its longstanding defense of its proprietary software.

I wonder how this is going to affect their own broken format that they
pushed through? IMHO their decision to support ODF was to help stem the
flow of user defections and has nothing to do with their so called
commitment.
I wonder if this has anything to do with it?
