I was struggling with exactly this - with the added disadvantage that I can read only a very few kanna or kanji, and know very, very little Japanese. I was trying to set it up for my granddaughter. So please - if you do find out the answer, could you tell the list - or anyhow me. I got as far as SCIM and setting up OOo to use Asian as well as Western European scripts, but I could not succeed in switching into Japanese - SCIM or no SCIM.
