Welcome to the wonderful world of OOo! 1) Your best bet if you only want the first page to not have a header is to use styles. You define a "first page" style that does not have a header, and a "normal page" style that does. When defining the "first page" style make sure that you select "normal page" in the "Next style" box in the dialog. 2) again i think you could use styles- have a "first section page" style and a "second section" page style. Or else use "Insert section" to let you re-define the standard page layout subsequent to where you want to change things. See the Help articles on styles and sections for further info. OOo relies heavily in styles which when you get used to it is actually a Good Thing.
