Please be more specific. Was it an excel .xls or was is a .xlsx. The latter (.xlsx) is produced by the newer versions of MS Office using the Open XML format that is not supported by OpenOffice. You would need to have them produce a .xls. Another reason for this if for some reason the file is corrupted, or you are trying to read it from a share.
