My daughter made a presentation using Impress and saved it in the Microsoft
Office format (tools-options-load/save-general-always save as). She tried to
open it at school on the teachers computer using PowerPoint and it wouldn't
open. Is there a way to make this work or would the teacher need to have open
office software on his/her computer.
When she saved, did she have automatic file name extension enabled? If
not, Windows doesn't know what to do with the file. If this is what
happened, it can be opened from within PowerPoint, but double clicking
won't work. A PowerPoint file has the .PPT extention. Also, verify it
was actually saved in the appropriate format and not just renamed.
There are a few other ways around this. The best solution would be for
the teacher to install OpenOffice or, failing that, the Sun ODF plugin,
which adds ODF support to Microsoft Office.

Another thing that can often save the day, is to install the portable
version of OpenOffice on a USB flash drive, which can then be plugged
into any Windows computer, to run OpenOffice. You can get the portable
version from portableapps.com.
