OK, I downloaded the .odp file. When I opened it OOo told me my version
2.4 was out of date. Do I assume correctly that the file was created in
a later version of OOo? Must be so, because when I tried the cryptic
instructions "Insert>Object>OlE>Writer" I did not have such options.

Jason,

I get the same message in Impress 2.4. I'm not sure what version it was created with. The instructions for 2.4 should read 'Insert>Object>OLE Object>...' Then you either select the option to 'Create a new OOo 2.4 text document' for insertion or 'Create from file' and then browse to an existing OOo text document.

It was created in 2.4.1 RC2, but I viewed it in 2.3.1 and then 3.0 beta..and I suppose I must of saved it in that last step. That is why the newer version is displaying.

Yes - the actual instructions are simple go to the slide you want the OLE object in.

Tools>Insert>Object>OLE>Objet

I selected Create new OOo 2.4 text document.
I simply did a copy paste of the text from Thunderbird email composer window. Then continuing to edit the Writer object in the Impress slide I just did Insert>Pircure>From file and dropped in the image, then set the wrap property.

That's it.

Sorry, since the original message said that he was an old hand at wrapping text in Writer all I really wanted to show was that he could use object embedding to get the result he wanted.
