To Jim Allan, et al: How much research did you do and did you ask on such forums as Linux Questions.Org? Did you ask any of the companies that actually make the different distro's? As for any accounting packages that work with Linux, I beg to differ with you as there ARE some really good ones, if you only make an honest effort to find them!

We did some asking when we were considering changing. My contact was someone who had worked as a consultant with some other companies who had changed altogther or partially to Linux. He said, when I explained what we were doing, that he shouldn’t guarantee we would be satisfied if we made a complete change that that time. In short, he didn’t want our business, unless we understood there were no guarantees. And we could guarantee no problems if we didn’t make the change.

Also I’ve learned from experience not to believe anything said by someone representing any company that is trying to sell you something. They are as likely to be bullshitting as honest, or pushing some feature they actually know little about. And they may believe they are being honest.

Accounting packages were a minor issue, which would have been solved if the rest had been solvable. I never said there were no good Linux accounting packages. Why thenn do you say that you disagree with me on that issue?

I never said there were no programs to use for servers.

I will not continue a discussion that attributes to me opinions that I have never expressed.

And this is not the forum for it in any case.

But should I take it that your opinion is that everyone, every airline, every scientific institution, every computerized shoe factory should immediately completely switch to Linux regardless of whether the software they are now using has a counterpart on Linux? That seems to me to be an absurd opinion.

Even OpenOffice refuses to support OpenType on Linux. That seems to me absurd also. But it should make it clear that no operating system will be perfect with every program.
