Please disregard.  The problem is that Impress has different defaults
for the keyboard shortcuts than the rest of OOo.  I corrected it by
going to Tools -> Customize -> Keyboard and clicking the Delete button
after selecting the CTRL-A shortcut.

Does anyone know why "Open" was the default action for CTRL-A?
