I've tried getting help from the OO site but everything is talking about much older versions of the software.

Well, the Mac porting page will get updated, but the people who are in the best position to do that are now working very hard at porting Open Office 3.0 to the Aqua interface.

When I try to launch OO what I get the is X11 window, and then after a very long time OO finally shows up.

10.5 uses a 'bleeding edge' form of X11 that causes problems. For the meantime, it is well recommended to update to a less buggy X11 [also known as XQuartz] from here: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/ wiki/X112.2.2 . Other than the delay, it *is* working, right?

You can also try the 3.0 beta test of Open Office/Aqua. Not only does it avoid the delay, but it will allow you to use the hotkeys, file requesters, etc. that are already familiar to you from OS X. Just keep in mind that the beta version is considered to be a 'test' version and you probably should not trust your resume, will, or lifetime collection of comic books to it.
